The timelapse cameras captured a single photo every 5 minutes for 21 days, although fouling began to occur on the front panel of the housing after ~2-3 weeks, partially obscuring the images. This configuration was updated from the 2024 monitoring season, during which timelapse cameras were set to take photos only between 7 am and 7 pm. However, the longer code seemed to contribute to camera failures, therefore we updated the settings to take photos every 5 minutes, 24/7, and have had greatly improved success of camera deployments.
These are the blue robotics parts used to collect data for Brian Timmer’s PhD thesis with Prof. Julia Baum, in association with the Kelp Rescue Initiative. The original camera setup was conceived by Kaityln Zerr in association with The Manta Trust for her MSc. Work, also with Prof. Baum, and was adapted to the current configuration by Brian Timmer with help from Alex Weibe, Emma Hancock, Alec Jones, and Kaitlyn Zerr. This guide was written by Alex Weibe, Emma Hancock, Alec Jones, and Brian Timmer, with funding from Prof. Baum and the Kelp Rescue Initiative’s Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Fund.
